DRIVER: Louie Cheetham A DRINK driver who nipped to the shops to buy cigarettes led police on an 80mph van chase through the streets. Louie Cheetham tried to escape officers after they spotted a Transit Connect as it accelerated aggressively on Manchester Road, Bolton, in the early hours of May 30. Mark Stephenson, prosecuting, told Bolton Crown Court how the van pulled into a petrol station but then drove away fast towards Farnworth. Instead of stopping when police activated their blue lights, 21-year-old Cheetham tried to flee, overtaking several other cars and turning into Hall Lane at Moses Gate, reaching speeds of 80mph on the 30mph road.
Professor Paul Salveson is a historian and writer and lives in Bolton. He is visiting professor in ‘Worktown Studies’ at the University of Bolton and author of several books on Lancashire history For thousands of Bolton children it was the most exciting time of the year, at least next to Christmas. ‘Bolton Holidays’ – or ‘Wakes Week’ - in the 1950s and 1960s was the fortnight when Bolton emptied, with thousands of families heading for the Lancashire seaside resorts, mostly Blackpool, or further afield. It started on the last Friday of June and lasted for a fortnight, though many people just went away for the first week. It was common for families to return to the same resort, and same boarding house, year in year out. The schools closed for a fortnight followed by a three week return before the summer holidays.

THE sacrifice made by Alice Thomasson will be honoured in a monument to the fallen. Alice a resident of Moses Gate who in 1917 determined that ‘she wanted to do her bit’ for the war effort was the only woman from Bolton to die in active service in World War One. The Friends of Moses Gate received the green light from planners to create the monument at Moses Gate Triangle, junction of Egerton Street and Bolton Road. The structure will be dedicated to those from the area who served in the two World Wars. It will be developed on reclaimed land.
