Mphoko Fails To Institute Blackout On Trial

By Mary Taruvinga THE trial of former Zimbabwe Vice President Phelekhezela Mphoko, who is accused of criminal abuse of office, will now be heard in an open court. Mphoko wanted the matter to be heard in a closed session arguing the information he would give would compromise state security. He is facing criminal abuse of office charges after he, in 2016, allegedly ordered police officers at the Avondale Police Station in Harare to release two former Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) Moses Juma and Davison Norupiri bosses. The two senior officials had been arrested on graft allegations. Last month, the High Court ordered Juma to start serving his two-year jail term after his appeal against sentence was quashed. He was convicted of engaging contractors with following due tender processes.

Sleaze At ZINARA As Under-Qualified Directors Are Hired, Home Gym, Hairdos, Vic Falls Meetings

By Ndatenda Njanike THE Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee has unearthed massive corruption at Zimbabwe National Roads Administration Authority (ZINARA) where under-qualified directors were hired while board members flew from Harare to Victoria Falls for a single meeting. Gym equipment for home use was purchased for the parastatal’s senior managers and every female employee was allowed to get new hairdos at upmarket saloons for two years. This was revealed in a report presented Thursday by the committee in the House of Assembly. The report covers ZINARA’s audited reports for 2017 and 2018 financials. One of the directors, Precious Murove, head of administration and human resources, was found to be a holder of a diploma in Biblical Studies and a certificate in stores management.
