Candidates Clash In New Mexico Congressional Election Debate - By Morgan Lee Associated Press Major-party candidates for an open congressional seat in New Mexico clashed over solutions to violent crime, police accountability, the southern border wall and the pandemic s economic challenges as early absentee voting ballot began. Four candidates have their names on the ballot for the 1st Congressional District post to succeed Deb Haaland after her departure from Congress to lead the Department of the Interior.  Election day is June 1 for a seat held by Democrats since 2009. Rep. Melanie Stansbury, a Democrat, and Republican state Sen. Mark Moores are at the forefront of the contest with major party backing, pursued by a Libertarian contender and an experienced political independent. Two write-in candidates are registered.

COVID Deaths And Hospitalizations Increase In New Mexico –  Albuquerque Journal, KUNM New Mexico health officials announced 181 new confirmed COVID-19 cases Tuesday and twelve additional deaths related to the virus. The Albuquerque Journal reports that while case numbers remain fairly steady, the number of deaths and hospitalizations reported yesterday mark a rise in New Mexico, where daily deaths due to COVID-19 in April have mostly remained in the single digits. The state announced yesterday 130 New Mexicans are now hospitalized with COVID-19. The Journal reports that’s a 35% increase since the beginning of the month, though remains well below the numbers seen at the end of last year.

Governor Vaccine Progress Means New Mexico Can Open Soon - By Susan Montoya Bryan, Associated Press Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Wednesday said she expects New Mexico to reopen completely by the end of June if the state reaches its goal of having at least 60% of residents fully vaccinated by then. She made the announcement during a virtual briefing, proclaiming that the state was “conquering COVID.” Lujan Grisham and state health officials said the state s pace of vaccinations has been as an overwhelming driver for the progress seen in recent months, with more than 60 people vaccinated for every new case of COVID-19 reported.

New Mexico Prepares To Fight Vaccine Hesitancy In Some Areas - By Morgan Lee Associated Press New Mexico health officials said Wednesday they are preparing to respond to pockets of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in some communities at the same time that overall interest in getting vaccinated increases. Health Secretary Tracie Collins said the state is exploring recruiting community champions trusted residents of regions with vaccine hesitancy who can address concerns about safety and effectiveness. Town halls also are a possibility to vet concerns and possible misinformation. And video testimonials about coronavirus vaccines already have been recorded. We ve got a lot of work we re going to be doing these next few weeks to really get ahead of this vaccine hesitancy, Collins said.
