Softball: Northwestern’s season comes to an end after dropping two to Kentucky in Lexington

After opening their season with 18 wins in their first 20 contests before sneaking into the NCAA Tournament following some spring struggles, the Northwestern Wildcats’ 2021 campaign has come to a close.
NU’s ‘Cats were sent packing after dropping two against the Tournament’s 14th-overall seed Kentucky, which first bested them 3-2 on Friday. In between their two defeats against UK, Kate Drohan’s team knocked the Miami-Ohio RedHawks out with a 7-1 victory on Saturday afternoon, but lacked the pitching and hitting to keep up with their SEC hosts in an elimination game later that day, falling 7-2.

Northwestern hosted the University of Nebraska in a four game series to close out the regular season. The Wildcats ended on a high note, taking three of the four games.
Northwestern took the first game on Friday. Backed by another great pitching performance by Danielle Williams, the Wildcats cruised to a 6-1 win.
Morgan Newport started an offensive burst in the second with a solo home run. With Maeve Nelson on base, Angela Zedak smashed a homer. Skyler Shellmyer singled with Emma Bartz on base for an RBI and she scored on a single by Rachel Lewis. In the fourth, Mac Dunlap homered to make it 6-1.
Softball
Heading into the series against Nebraska, Northwestern was on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament. Coach Kate Drohan knew that the Wildcats’ postseason chances would rest on their performance over the weekend.
“My team understood that we needed to take care of business this weekend, so that was pretty motivating in itself,” Drohan said. “My job all weekend was to make sure they didn’t get too tight.”
NU took three out of four against Nebraska, giving the Cats their first series win since April 18. Despite inconsistent results over the past month, the NCAA selection committee deemed NU’s season which started with nine straight wins good enough to merit a postseason bid.
