NJ schools get $125M boost for special education programs

View Comments New Jersey will pump $125 million in additional funding into special-education programs in the coming year, a landmark increase that supporters say will ease the burden on local schools and families of students with disabilities.  By law, local districts aren t allowed to take cost into account when determining educational needs for those students. But the costs of schooling for high-need students can crush the budgets of smaller communities, and lawsuits over families who feel shortchanged have become commonplace.  So has pressure on parents to pick up and move to new districts thought to be more accommodating. “We were hearing people say a family moved in with three kids with challenges and now our budget is really screwed,  said Senate President Stephen Sweeney, who championed the increase.  We recognized that we weren’t living up to our obligation as far as extraordinary aid for special education.

Morristown Daily Record MORRISTOWN  Morristown s affordable housing plan is under review by the Fair Share Housing Center after the township failed to provide a progress report that was due last July. The nonprofit organization tasked with enforcing The Mount Laurel Doctrine housing regulations filed a court motion against the township last month. The township provided the report last week, but the year delay is rare, said Adam Gordon, executive director for Fair Share Housing Center.  There were a number of towns that were a few months late, but a year I think is pretty rare, Gordon said.  More than 330 towns across the state have agreements and affordable housing plans. Known as the midpoint realistic opportunity review report, the progress report is to ensure municipalities are on track  to comply with their affordable housing requirements set by a 2017 court-mandated settlement agreement between FSHC and New Jersey municipalities. The report is also require
