There isnât much remaining of the town of Blooming Grove.
Once a rural enclave east of Lake Monona, most of the town over the years has been consumed by the cities of Madison and Monona.
Itâs been dissected by Interstate 39-90 and the Beltline. The fire department was dissolved in 2015 and the town now receives fire protection and ambulance service from the Madison Fire Department. The Dane County Sheriffâs Office provides police services, but by 2027 whatâs left of the town, much of it east of the interstate, will be absorbed by the city of Madison.
Located along Monona Drive and adjacent to the Monona Golf Course, the Nathaniel Dean House was constructed in 1856 for a more than 500-acre farm for Nathaniel and Harriet Dean, who had sold their dry goods store in Downtown Madison.

We were a little surprised to see so many local food businesses opening amid COVID-19 (we featured 15 in the December issue), and the list continues to grow. There seems to be an appetite for new food and drink options served by local operations. We’ve come across seven new players in the food scene, including a poke bar in Middleton, a cafe and bakery in New Glarus and a butcher shop on Monona Drive.

MADISON, Wis. – There’s a unique coffee shop that’s had to adapt to many changes over the last year.
Java Cat is located off of Monona Drive and Cottage Grove Road. It isn’t your typical coffee shop, and you’ll see that right away when you step through the doors.
Owner Renee Raspiller can’t help but get a little choked up about how thankful she is after the last year.
“We live in the best neighborhood, in the best city, and my customers are amazing,” Raspiller said. “I’ve got some really special people who are really looking out for us.”
