Bank robbery details emerge in shooting

The person involved in a shootout with Wisconsin State Patrol troopers last week in Fort Atkinson was believed to have brandished a handgun and taken an undisclosed amount of money from Summit Credit Union in Monona earlier that day. Joseph R. Crawford, 23, is believed to have been the suspect who entered the bank on Monona Drive Dec. 9 at approximately 9:44 a.m., according to a press release from the Monona Police Department. City of Monona Police officers responded to a report of an armed bank robbery at Summit Credit Union, 5809 Monona Drive. Upon arrival, officers learned that one male suspect entered the bank where he contacted two employees before he brandished a handgun and ordered the two employees to the vault, according to the release.

Madison police said a preliminary investigation showed that a minivan and car both tried to change into the middle lane on the Beltline at the same time. According to an incident report, the vehicles collided which sent the minivan skidding on its side. Police said a passenger in the minivan was partially ejected from the van while it was moving. They suffered significant injuries. The drivers of both vehicles were not seriously injured. Images from the DOT’s online traffic map showed traffic on the Beltline backed up to the Monona Drive exit.

The Dane County District Attorney s Office on Nov. 13 recommended no charges against the Monona police officer present when a man died in September. Digital photos, video, and audio records can be downloaded from the DOJ website. Authorities found Elliot Johnson dead in a car on Sept. 17 near the Madison Metropolitan Sewage District after a car chase, crash and interaction with a Monona police officer.
