Duane and his wife, Diane, live in Howe, Ind., coming from St. Joseph County. He works at Burr Oak Tool and Diane is employed at Remington Seed.
In summer 2020, Duane was the picture of health at age 59. He had no underlying conditions and practiced all the COVID-19 precautions.
The last weekend in August, he started “feeling funny.” He noticed it on a Saturday, again on Sunday and, by Monday, went back to bed rather than to work. Later, he went for a COVID-19 test.
“By the time the doctor’s office called with the positive results, I had lost my taste and smell,” Duane said. “I knew I had (the virus).”
