San Diego mayor announces hire of city s first chief race and equity officer

SAN DIEGO  Mayor Todd Gloria announced Friday that San Diego had hired its first chief race and equity officer. Kim Desmond, who is currently chief equity officer for the city and county of Denver, will lead the city’s recently created Office of Race and Equity. She will start Aug. 3, according to a statement from the Mayor’s Office. Gloria said his administration is working to make equity a priority. He said Desmond will help ensure the decisions the city makes are done with the goal of ending disparities in San Diego city government and working toward greater diversity and inclusion in the city’s programs, services and policies.

San Diego mayor launches Come play outside program

Print Mayor Todd Gloria launched the “Come Play Outside” summer program Thursday, inviting more than 15,000 kids to participate in a “summer for all of us” initiative. The city and county, the San Diego Parks Foundation and other foundations are funding outdoor adventures, aquatic activities, movies in the park, arts, and STEM and STEAM programs for ages 17 and under. (STEM refers to science, technology and engineering; STEAM includes arts.) Summer programs were organized to support and engage youth as the community emerges from a pandemic, Gloria said at a press conference at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center. The initiative will focus on underserved communities including southeastern San Diego, City Heights and San Ysidro.

Community calls for reform after latest study of San Diego police data finds racial disparities

SAN DIEGO   In the wake of a new study that found deep racial disparities in San Diego police data, community members on Tuesday urged the city to adopt reforms that would limit when and how officers conduct stops and searches practices that disproportionately impact communities of color. The findings, which showed that people of color especially Black people are stopped, searched and subjected to force more often than their White counterparts, were shared with the City Council during a virtual meeting. About two dozen speakers said that the study is the latest to show what they already knew: Communities of color in San Diego experience biased-based policing, as well as over-policing.
