Sojourner House could be facility for homeless parolees and probationers

A 19th Ward home that served as a convent for decades is now targeted to provide transitional housing for men who are homeless after their incarceration. The former Sojourner House at 30 Milbank St. in the city is scheduled for sale to the Spiritus Christi Prison Outreach, or SCPO, which plans to move its current transitional housing for parolees and probationers to the location. The SCPO works to provide homeless men and women who have left jail or prison with safe housing and training for job opportunities. A person basically doesn’t have to go back to the streets, doesn’t have to be homeless again, doesn t have to commit crimes for financial reasons, doesn t have to go back to jail, said Jim Smith, the executive director of SCPO and a staff member since its founding in 1980.

With new grant, Chicago s Tolton Spirituality Center hosts first event series

Augustus Tolton, the first U.S. Catholic priest publicly known to be Black. Inspired by Tolton s legacy and spirituality, the Tolton Spirituality Center will look for opportunities to create programs to benefit people in Chicago, said Norbertine Fr. Canon A. Gerard Jordan, the center s executive director. The center will also facilitate educational exchanges between parish leaders in the Chicago Archdiocese and beyond, and lead conversations about racial injustice.
