Meeting of the Displaced People Gathering of El Geneina (RD)
The
Displaced People Gathering of El Geneina for people
from refugee camps in West Darfur announced its “categorical refusal to agree to any investment projects” before they can return to the homes they fled from last month.
Over 100,000 people were displaced when large groups of gunmen attacked a number of districts of El Geneina and the two Kerending camps for displaced people on January 16 and 17. 60,000 of them sought refuge in schools and government buildings in central El Geneina, while 40,000 others fled to neighbouring villages.
In a statement, the Gathering described the planning of projects in the absence of their owners as a form of “robbery”. They stressed that any projects must be approved by them before they go ahead.
The Sudan Liberation Movement led by Minni Minawi (SLM-MM) called the Memorandum of Understanding, signed between the Sudanese government and the International Criminal Court (ICC) concerning the trial of Ali Kushayb, “a first step in achieving justice for the victims of war and genocide in Darfur” in a statement yesterday.

The sit-in of Arab tribes in El Geneina has grown over the past week (Social media)
The sit-in of Arab tribes in El Geneina, capital of West Darfur, has entered its second week. The protestors have closed all roads to and from the city.
Delegations from Zalingei and Nyala arrived at the sit-in square in Kubari El Naseem in El Geneina to support the protestor’s demands to dismiss state governor Mohamed El Doma, move the camps for displaced people from the city, and restructure the state police force.
The closure of roads is isolating the city of El Geneina and causes a rise in prices of goods.

According to the West Darfur Doctors Committee, the number of victims from the El Geneina massacre has risen to 163 after a severely injured person died and another body was found. The RSF claims that peace has been restored in the area but many are still displaced and unrest, instability, and protests remain present.
The attacks in, and around, the capital of West Darfur have now cost the lives of at least 163 and left more than 100,000 people displaced in attacks by Arab herdsmen on El Geneina and nearby camps for the displaced on January 16 and 17.
