Protests against withdrawal of Darfur peacekeeping mission UNAMID

December 30 - 2020 DARFUR / KHARTOUM / PORT SUDAN One of the protests in Darfur against the UNAMID withdrawal (Social media) Protests were held across the states of Darfur, demanding the continuation of the joint United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID). Hundreds of displaced people marched from local camps in Central Darfur to the UNAMID headquarters in Zalingei, calling on the international community to reconsider the end of the mission. Protestors said that the withdrawal of UNAMID exacerbates the deterioration of the security situation and leads to rising levels of crime. They also pointed out that women face physical, sexual and verbal violence, and that they are in fear of being forced to return to their lands and villages.

Governor: Smuggling widespread in West Darfur

December 30 - 2020 KHARTOUM A large amount of cannabis seized in South Darfur (RD correspondent) West Darfur wali (governor) Mohamed El Doma said at a press conference yesterday that arms trade, drug trafficking and commodity smuggling are widespread in his state, “both in the cities and in the camps for displaced people”. El Doma acknowledged West Darfur is not able to control the smuggling due to the lack of sufficient forces. He stated that there is massive proliferation of all kinds of light and heavy weapons in his state, “enough to arm an entire army”. He announced that West Darfur will start collecting weapons and other forbidden equipment soon.
