The pandemic has had a large effect on our lives over the past year, potentially including our drinking habits. Many of us have felt lonely, uncertain and fearful over recent events, and stress levels have skyrocketed. While many people were able to work from home, many were required to go into workplaces. Some lost their jobs or closed their businesses. Losing our daily routine, a sense of normalcy or even the means to provide for our families took a toll on our mental health.

For about a week now, appointments have gone unfilled at state Department of Health vaccine clinics in Kahului, mere months after people once waited hours in line to get a shot and were sometimes turned away as demand overwhelmed the clinic.

Health centers across Maui County are expanding COVID-19 vaccination efforts to overcome any access-to-care obstacles that residents may face in rural communities.
“I think the health centers are doing an incredible job given the limited resources we had up until now,” said Cheryl Vasconcellos, executive director of Hana Health. “It’s been financially challenging, it’s been challenging for all of our staff and community, so we’re getting there and I’m really proud of the progress we’re making. We’ve really done some incredible things because it’s been a learning curve for all of us.”

A farm fresh food distribution scheduled for today at the Molokai Community Health Center has been rescheduled to Feb. 19.
The event has been moved “due to unforeseen circumstances with a distribution error in our fresh produce delivery,” the health Center and Maui Food Bank said in an announcement Thursday.
The health center also announced that it plans to launch an on-site Maui Food Bank pantry starting in February.
