The move follows months of rulemaking and an independent investigation into products sold in the state’s adult use market.  Specifically, new OLCC rules take effect this month to ban: Vitamin E acetate; squalene and squalane; propylene glycol; and triglycerides. Further, the rules require more comprehensive disclosures around “non-cannabis additives,” and that products clearly note if an “additive is meant for human inhalation.”

That “natural flavor” can actually be a skin moisturizer ingredient derived from shark liver oil a substance called squalane, or squalene. Burning it could give you a lung injury. This Thursday, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission will move to ban the cosmetics ingredients squalane and squalene from entering the legal marijuana vape market and, subsequently, consumers’ lungs. The ban would take effect immediately.

Oregon wants some cannabis vape manufacturers to recall products that might cause lung injuries. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission is asking for a voluntary recall of two potential cannabis vape ingredients: squalene and squalane. They’re derived from olives and have been used to dilute the liquid that goes into vape pens so it can easily vaporize. The agency said the ingredients have been linked with Vitamin E acetate and the safety problems that put thousands of vapers in the hospital with lung damage last year.
