For Klamath Residents, Getting to McKinleyville, Arcata, Eureka is Easier Than Traveling to Crescent City

Many motorists are frustrated at having to wait two hours to continue up U.S. 101 through Last Chance Grade, but for Klamath residents, getting to Crescent City has become such an ordeal it’s easier to head south for groceries, health care, even work.
Debbie Perry, who works at a hotel in Crescent City, is often an hour late to her afternoon shifts because of the ongoing construction at Last Chance Grade. She’s also a driver with Door Dash, but operates out of Eureka.

Caltrans Decides Collision Data Warrants Safety Improvements Near Dollar General Store in Smith River
Caltrans is pursuing funding for a project meant to address an increase in traffic collisions near the Dollar General store in Smith River.
The project would include a left turn pocket, a right turn lane and potential widening near U.S. 101 and Timbers Boulevard, Caltrans District 1 spokesman Myles Cochrane told the
Wild Rivers Outpost on Thursday. But it could be years before construction begins, he said.
According to Del Norte County Board of Supervisors chairman, Chris Howard, whose district includes Smith River, safety and congestion at that intersection has been a concern since the store opened about five years ago. Howard said several of his constituents expressed their concerns at a community meeting with Caltrans representatives David Morgan and Jaime Matteoli.

This has not been a good year for Last Chance Grade.
The notoriously unstable stretch of U.S. Highway 101 just south of Crescent City in Del Norte County has been closed several times in recent months due to landslides, stranding travelers, cutting off commerce and for a time preventing school children who live south of the closure site from getting to school.
Motorists trying to traverse the 3-mile section of roadway that serves as a major artery between the northernmost reaches of the state to points south are still facing sometimes lengthy delays as Caltrans works to shore up the most recent geological activity in an area with more than 200 documented active landslides.
