Welcome to Seven in Seven, where each Thursday in this space we would typically take a look at concerts coming to the region over the next week. With most shows on hold due to the pandemic, hereâs a look at seven of the best albums being released April 16:
Alaskan Tapes â For Us Alone
The moniker Alaskan Tapes represents Toronto-based composer Brady Kendallâs ever-evolving ambient music project. He wrote the nine songs on For Us Alone in three groups of three, and as a result the music flows cohesively from one track to the next. Exactly three songs feature drums, one in each suite, a technique that helps flesh out the groups and connect them to the whole. Everything was written and recorded in Kendallâs home studio space with strings added remotely by Jonathan Dreyfuss in Berlin, who was the only other musician to play on the album. 11 Past the Hour opens with its title song, a delicious, twangy, string-laden Nancy Sinatra Bond theme that never was. The album closes with a lyrically empowered torch song, “Never Look Back”, which rises and rises over a marching band drum tattoo and swelling orchestration. Its enormousness is hard to argue with. Unfortunately, in between these two, Imelda May’s sixth album is a bit of a stinker.
