Concerns raised over disused Cape school buildings posing a crime risk

Cape Town - The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) have been blamed for leaving disused school buildings to be stripped and vandalised, posing a risk to nearby communities.
A recent example was the property on which Uitsig High School was located, which was handed back to the DTPW after the school s closure in 2019.
Education MEC Debbie Schäfer s spokesperson, Kerry Mauchline, said Beauvallon High School in Valhalla Park is still open. However, they are aware of an “old Central Primary School” building in Diep River, which she said would have been handed back to the DTPW prior to 2000.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Following COVID-19 outbreaks at multiple schools in the state, three schools will voluntarily close to in-person learning due to coronavirus cases.
The state Public Education Department announced on Tuesday that Mesa Alta Junior High School and Central Primary in Bloomfield and Socorro High School will move to exclusively remote learning starting on Wednesday.
Bloomfield closed the junior high “because there were enough potential exposures among staff members who chose not to be vaccinated that Mesa Alta could no longer support in-person learning” and Central Primary closed its doors because a majority of kids at the school would have had to quarantine as close contacts related to two positive cases. Meanwhile, seven students at Socorro High School tested positive since Thursday.

High School senior shares impact of school shutting down due to COVID-19 cases
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (KOAT) A student at Eldorado High called the school’s forced closure due to COVID-19 cases a “big disappointment.”
Eldorado High is the first public school in the state that’s been forced to close after more than 10 students and faculty tested positive.
“I think a lot of people are missing out,” said Joseph Leyba, a senior at Eldorado High. “I think I’m one of them.”
A senior year that’s anything but normal.
Joseph Leyba plays on the football team at Eldorado High. Their season took place in the spring, not fall and instead of a crowd of fans, there were near-empty stands. Now one week after the school is finally back open, the state shut it down.
