Mondelez to invest in cocoa research and cultivation in few states SECTIONS Share Synopsis At present, the maker of Cadbury and Oreo, gets about 30% of its raw materials from India while the rest is imported, mainly from Africa. The snacking company invests about Rs 2 crore annually on cocoa research in the country as it is not a native crop and also promotes cocoa farming through its Cocoa Life program (earlier known as Cadbury Cocoa partnership) in the four southern states of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Agencies Mondelez is planning to add 5000 hectares of new cocoa cultivation area in the four states. Discussion is also on to expand to Maharashtra and Assam which are emerging as optimal regions for growing the chocolate making ingredient.

At the same time it has said that arecanut production in Karnataka, which contributes about 75% to the domestic production, witnessed a growth of 95% during the last five years. In a written reply to unstarred questions by the Member of Parliament K.C. Ramamurthy in the Rajya Sabha on February 5, the Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar said that the total production in the State touched 8.5 lakh tonnes in 2019-20 from 4.36 lakh tonnes in 2015-16, thus posting a growth of 94.95 %.
