SIDNEY Dawud Bloomstein took his seat at a grand piano staged at the Bowl in the Pines Amphitheater and delivered.
Bound for Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Bloomstein of Freedom, performed a flawless rendition of the second movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Sonata Pathétique” during his Maine Arts Academy’s 2021 graduation Friday evening on the campus of Snow Pond Center for the Arts.

‘Virtual’ charity game raises $36,000 for children’s cancer
Faced with a pandemic and health protocols limiting or prohibiting indoor gatherings, the 27th annual C-U Swish-Out Childhood Cancer Challenge, organized and presented by Town & Country Federal Credit Union, was at risk of being canceled for the first time in its history. However, based on feedback from past participants and strong support from sponsors and volunteers, it was clear that the ‘shot’ must go on. Instead of a one-day, 3-on-3, co-ed tournament for adults and youth teams, this year’s event transitioned into a ‘virtual’ 3-on-3, free-throw competition.
The competition, which ran from April 12 to May 8 raised $36,000 to support the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.

The Maine CDC reports 244 new cases of COVID-19 statewide. Androscoggin County is the only area of Maine that remains yellow in the Department of Education’s color coding system, because of a continued elevated case rate in the region. The yellow designation suggests a hybrid learning model, with a combination of in-person and remote learning.
The driver who hit and killed a woman in a crosswalk near Jackson Laboratory in December will not face any criminal charges, after the Hancock County District Attorney said the state couldn’t meet the burden of proof. Now, McKenna Unobskey’s family says they want the driver held accountable. DA Matt Foster told WABI-TV that the family still has the option to file a civil suit.
Maine looking for new poet laureate
The deadline to apply is June 1.
The Maine Arts Commission is looking for Maine’s next poet laureate.
Gov. Janet Mills shares a moment with Stuart Kestenbaum, who has just completed his term as Maine poet laureate. Mills, a published poet, will serve on the committee that will select the next poet laureate. Applications are due June 1.

The person selected will replace Stuart Kestenbaum, who has completed his five-year term.
“We are so grateful to Stu for his wonderful work as poet laureate,” Maine Arts Commission Executive Director David Greenham said in a news release.
