Share UNITY The Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association is accepting applications to be part of the 2021 Common Ground Country Fair, to be held Sept. 24-26. Current open applications are as follows: • Agricultural Demonstrations due Monday, March 22; • Youth Enterprise Zone & Youth Enterprise Transition Zone due Monday, March 22; • Health & Healing due Monday, March 29; • Young Maine due Monday, March 29; • Speaker and Presenter Application due Monday, May 3; and • 2022 Poster Contest submissions postmarked by Monday, Aug. 2. Free class: caring for your backyard orchard

(Photo courtesy Good Tern Co-op) In its continuing online series, the Good Tern Co-op in Rockland will offer a class on caring for your backyard orchard on Wednesday, March 24, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Co-sponsor for the class is the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA). Instructor C.J. Walke, MOFGA’s Downeast Specialist, will discuss the basics of growing fruit trees in your backyard or garden. Walke will cover soil building and fertility management, pruning basics, and common insects and diseases that can affect backyard orchards. He has been working with growers on organic tree fruit cultivation and organic gardening methods for over a decade.
