Doctors break down Manitoba First Nations COVID numbers

For months, the First Nations Health and Social Secretariat of Manitoba has been reporting alarming COVID-19 numbers.
There are a reported 2,780 cases of COVID-19 in First Nations people, while the province reports 3,466 active cases overall.
Finally, yesterday, the provincial government and the secretariat got together to speak to Manitobans.
Long before the pandemic arrived in the province, it was predicted First Nations would be hit hard. This has come to pass.
First Nations make up more than 50 per cent of COVID cases in Manitoba.
Dr. Marcia Anderson, public health lead for the Manitoba First Nation Pandemic Response and Co-ordination Team, joined Dr. Joss Reimer, medical lead for Manitoba’s Vaccination Implementation Task Force, on Monday to address these facts.

Waywayseecappo First Nation members will go to the polls Feb. 23, with 37 of those members vying for a seat on council and one member challenging current Chief Murray Clearsky.

In 2019, Waywayseecappo had a registered population of 2,818 people, with 1,604 living on reserve.
Jeremy Shingoose, Clearsky’s challenger, is running on a platform of transparency, accountability and putting community members first, according to a post on a community Facebook page.

When the government released its COVID-19 vaccine prioritization list Wednesday, Manitoba Métis were notably absent. Both Dr. Reimer and (Health) Minister (Heather) Stefanson again did not say Métis or set aside vaccines for Métis. Even though there’s a shortfall that’s occurring, it should not prohibit them from saying the Métis will be in the second phase, when all the abundance of vaccines will be coming, said David Chartrand, president of the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF).
