On Thursday, the front page of one newspaper reported that ministers were increasingly optimistic –  yet the front page of another newspaper reported that ministers were increasingly pessimistic. A peculiar situation. Hopes, it seems, are simultaneously rising and falling, with the numbers looking both better and worse.

But, try as I might, I can’t recall any being quite so soporifically dull as the one I endured today (Monday). In fact, it was so soporifically dull that I’m not quite sure how I’m going to make my word count. Except perhaps by typing out the phrase “soporifically dull” another 200 times.
