For Boris Johnson, today must have felt daunting. Because, at the age of 56, he was attempting to do something he’d never done before.
Keep his mouth shut.
It can’t have been easy. This is a man, after all, who made his name as one of Fleet Street’s most gleefully outspoken columnists. For over 20 years he was a devil-may-care purveyor of outrageous opinions on every topic under the sun. Politics, the children of single mothers, the physical attractiveness of female delegates at Labour party conference – you name it: he had something scandalous, or at least mischievous, to say about it.

Even the most powerful businesses now live in terror of causing offence. The other day, I was about to watch an old film. But before it began, the screen flashed up a stern warning.
The film, it said sternly, “includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together.”

It’s dog eat dog in politics, so here’s my masterplan to keep Dilyn in Downing Street
No 10’s much-maligned canine resident clearly needs a good PR campaign if he s going to restore his reputation and get out of the dog house
Dilyn is alleged to have chewed some of Boris Johnson s furniture
Something very strange is going on in Westminster. Of course, it’s always been a spiteful little world, seething with malicious gossip. Traditionally, though, the subjects of said gossip have been politicians.
At the moment, however, the subject is a household pet.
In recent weeks, you will doubtless have read a series of unflattering allegations about the behaviour of Dilyn, the little rescue dog owned by Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds.
