Chicago Navy Pier Flyover bike and pedestrian bridge opens

In the middle of downtown and in the heart of the 18-mile-long Lakefront Trail the flyover stretches about 2,160 feet. It begins at Jane Addams Park and the Ohio Street Beach on the north side of the Chicago River, to DuSable Harbor on the south side. The structure also includes a ramp that leads down to Navy Pier. According to Lightfoot s office, the Navy Pier Flyover paid for by the state and the federal government was built in three phases as funding became available. That resulted in delays; the flyover was originally scheduled to be finished in 2018.  The first two phases were completed in 2018 and 2019. Structural and mechanical work on the Lakeshore Drive Bridge will continue through this year, the mayor s office said.

In 2019, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Chicago would make the city’s intersections more accessible for blind and low-vision pedestrians, pledging on the 29th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act to add more crossing signals with audible tones.

Strong winds knock out power to 12,700, topple trees and one building

National Weather Service Wind gusts peaked at 55 mph late Wednesday and toppled trees, at least one building and knocked out power to thousands of Chicagoans. About 12,700 people lost power overnight mainly from downed lines caused by wind and falling or swaying tree branches, according to ComEd spokesman John Schoen. By noon Thursday, the number of customers with outages was down to 576, according to ComEd’s website. No significant injuries were reported by city agencies despite gale-force winds and warnings by forecasters to tie down loose objects, That includes a partial building collapse during the heaviest gusts in the Avondale neighborhood. A wall of 2901 N. Campbell Ave. collapsed onto a neighboring building undergoing demolition, causing a wall of that building to also fall, according to Chicago Department of Buildings spokeswoman Mimi Simon.

Chicago Drivers Can Be Fined for Going 6 MPH Over Speed Limit Starting Monday

In recent years, communities like Archer Heights have been impacted by more than one traffic-related death, and some leaders say the city is making the right decision. Too many people that are driving right now think that a red light or a speed limit or a stop sign are suggested actions, said Thomas S. Baglia, president of the Archer Heights Civic Association. Those things are there for our safety. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has a tough sell ahead as she tries to convince at least 26 Chicago aldermen her budget plan a mix of higher taxes and fees is the best way to fill a $1.2 billion hole in the city’s budget. NBC 5 Political Reporter Mary Ann Ahern sat down for a one-on-one conversation with the mayor.
