Officials find cuts within budget, give a nod to slimmed plan

5/25/2021 Confusion over school cut PAWTUCKET – A cut from a near-maximum 3.74 percent tax increase to 2.5 percent increase is “more palatable” to city taxpayers after multiple financial hits, said Councilor Mark Wildenhain, head of the council’s finance subcommittee. Working with Mayor Donald Grebien’s administration, he said the council was able to find the cuts needed to lessen the burden, though there are still some unknown variables going forward. The overall decrease in expenditures given initial approval by the council’s finance subcommittee and committee of the whole at its May 19 meeting is $1,191,284, including $421,884 in fire overtime and $734,400 in lower operating expenses, including $499,900 in funding to the schools, $200,000 in passive parks school chargebacks, $20,000 in sewer bills, $14,500 in audit fees, and a decrease in capital expenses for police communication equipment of $35,000.

City seeks to address sidewalk memorials, graffiti

PAWTUCKET – City Councilor Melissa DaRosa says she understands the trauma that motivates people to set up memorials to loved ones lost to violence or car crashes, but she believes there must be another solution to the messy situation the city is finding itself in as a result. These shrines tend to grow, she said, with candles, flowers, and even nip alcohol bottles placed on public property and create both an unsightly look for the city and a safety hazard for students who walk to school. In some spots, chairs and even trash cans have made an appearance. “That’s just not what I want for the community,” she said.

Pawtucket deploys roving police detail to send message on shootings

4/13/2021 City also cracking down on late restaurant closings PAWTUCKET – The City Council, at Council President David Moran’s urging, has ordered an extra police presence in the area of Newport Avenue and Benefit Street in response to multiple shootings here, a unique new approach, say officials. Moran recalled the Boston “combat zone” of the 1970s, saying he doesn’t want to see this area in his District 1 or any other part of the city overtaken by this sort of violence, where people from outside the city believe they can come to stay at establishments after hours and “shoot wherever we want.” If nothing is done, said Moran, the ripple effect will be tremendous.
