Judge Orders Michael Novak Jailed Until Trial

Police arrested Michael A. Novak, 60, of Los Alamos, Feb. 24 after State District Judge Jason Lidyard ruled there was sufficient evidence to charge him with multiple counts of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old child.
The child’s mother left the child in Novak’s care for two days in January during which time the alleged crimes took place.
Because of the severity of the charges and Novak’s prior history, the judge ordered Novak held in jail without bond. Novak was accused in two separate incidents of sexual assault in the 1990s.
Novak was originally charged with 27 felony charges, including 12 counts of child rape. All but five counts were dropped. Novak now faces four counts of criminal sexual penetration of a child and one count of criminal sexual contact.

A warrant was issued Jan. 20 for Michael A. Novak, 60, of Los Alamos, wanted for rape of a child under 13, according to court documents obtained by the Los Alamos Daily Post.
The alleged crimes occurred Jan. 17-18. Los Alamos police arrested Novak in the afternoon of Jan. 20 at his apartment on Yucca Street. He was later released from jail after the District Attorney declined to request he remain in custody pending trial.
