Mikey Wright Surfs Like a Man on Fire Wednesday April 21, 2021 Staff
Surfing has changed a lot over the years. What used to be seen as an activity for outcasts, something for the dregs of society to spend their time doing, is now a bonafide sport. It’s got a league with athletes who train to win. Podiums and Red Bull and trophies and all that. But there are a still a lot of surfers who don’t fit a particular mold, and one of them is Mikey Wright, recent hero of the North Shore.
Mikey’s interesting. While his brother Owen and sister Tyler are staples of the tour, Mikey’s hovering on the fringe and, we’d suspect, that’s just the way he likes it. With that now-famous mullet and hard-charging mentality, Mikey’s surfing is a pleasure to watch, but not always conducive to winning heats. Mikey Wright just wants to send it, and in Quik’s latest 7-minute advertisement, he does just that. Mikey Wright surfs like a man on fire.

I grew up in the 80s and was never a fan of the mullet. This is despite the fact the âbusiness at the front, party at the backâ look was being worn by singers I idolised at the time: David Bowie, Chrissie Hynde, Prince, Joan Jett, and Chrissy Amphlett.
According to the teenagers I talk to, the mullet became popular in surfing circles when Australian pro-surfer Mikey Wright started sporting one on his Instagram page in 2017. Fast forward to 2021 and it is sometimes worn with mini bangs, or even mooshed together with a mohawk. Itâs the latter look my son adopted.
