Staff Music and surfing just go together. But more so than that, South African jams and Mikey February’s incredible, flowing surf style just go together. As Mikey explains at the beginning of the Sonic Souvenirs, this is just episode one, and they have plans to take the series all over the globe, from India to the Philippines and beyond. Due to COVID-19 they couldn’t go all those places just yet, so Mikey stayed home, and he’s glad he did. The first episode takes us to South Africa, and it’s a must-watch as well as a must-listen, with Zulu guitarist Madala Kunene providing the soundtrack, as well as quite a rad performance at the end of the premiere version of the episode (above).

WATCH: Mikey February Exploring The Sounds & Surf Of South Africa In Sonic Souvenirs Luke Gartside The first episode of Sonic Souvenirs, a new series from Mikey February, Kai Neville and the crew at Vans, just dropped. According to Mikey, the concept was born of the desire to capture the whole experience of going on a surf trip, with a focus on the local culture, the people, the landscape and as the title suggests, the sounds. While plans had been to kick off the series in India and The Philippines, Covid sculptured all that, forcing Mikey on an adventure around his home nation instead. In the end, he says it worked out as a blessing in disguise, offering the perfect opportunity to get to know some of the contours and cultures of his native coastline he’d never had a chance to visit.
