If nothing else, 2020 has given us all a new appreciation for the waves that will, ultimately, mean more than every other wave we’ll ever surf combined: our home waves. All it took was one big, long, tragic global pandemic to ground us (literally and metaphorically) and reinforce our love for the place that really shapes us from gromhood through senior citizenship, regardless of all the wonderful places we go in between.
For perpetually transient World Tour surfer Jordy Smith, that place is South Africa. And to showcase that connection, or rather, that reconnection, Red Bull Media House and Iconic Agency are dropping “Shaping Jordy,” which follows Smith and his friend, fellow South African pro and revered stylist Mikey February, on a surf-drenched, character-rich, beauty-steeped trip down the South African coastline.

When it comes to right-hand point breaks, none can compare with Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa, a wave that has started careers and brought joy to anyone that’s paddled out into its waters. It’s no question that the COVID-19 pandemic has hit communities of lesser means the hardest. Since the pandemic began, residents of Jeffrey’s Bay have had trouble finding work, feeding their families and sustaining normal living conditions.
