Stu Whitney's Debut Novel Chronicles Coronavirus in South Dakota – Dakota Free Press

By Cory Allen Heidelberger on 2021-08-03 I’d been thinking about Stephen King’s plague novel  The Stand since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. In that novel, a flu virus engineered (unlike the real coronavirus, which is worse than the flu but for which there is no clear evidence of laboratory origins or human engineering) by the U.S. military gets out and kills almost all of humanity in a couple weeks. (And that’s just King’s way of setting the stage for the novel’s real cosmic conflict.) Having read  The Stand in my formative years and thus always carried that dreadful apocalyptic vision in my worst-case-scenario soul, I found some relief as March and April and the rest of our dreadful 2020 dragged along and left most of us alive to worry and complain and wait for vaccines.

More Than Just The Pandemic

Hard as it is to believe now, things actually did occur in 2020 that were mostly beyond the scope of the COVID-19 pandemic. That was a fact we realized as we compiled our year-end list of top stories. COVID-19 was so overwhelming in its impact and received its own section for review, which ran in Saturday’s Press & Dakotan. Today, we present the top five “non-COVID” local stories of 2020 — some of which may have been lost in our memories once the coronavirus took over. The P&D news staff selected the Yankton School District opt-out as the top story of 2020. Voters approved it in February after similar efforts were rejected in 2011 and 2012.
