There is one reason more compelling than utter deliciousness to get a cast-iron grilled hot dog made with dry-aged Roseda Black Angus Farm beef from the mobile Catalyst Hot Dogs stand and that’s to hear its owner, Silver Spring resident Chris Van Jura, pronounce “hot dawwwg” in his native New Jersey accent.
Van Jura, 39, considers selling Jersey dogs his true calling. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theater from Western Connecticut State University in 2005. After college, he worked at a deli in Lodi, New Jersey, for four years to support himself between auditions and acting gigs. “What I was doing there is what I do now over-the-counter banter,” he says with a laugh. A number of bars and restaurants around DC decided to temporarily close their doors or go into “hibernation” during the pandemic. But now, with warm weather, vaccinations, and the loosening of Covid capacity restrictions and regulations, many are reopening (though some are still limiting seating and/or keeping mask policies). Here’s a running list of newly opened spots, including some restaurants that are offering dine-in for the first time in months.

Restaurateurs are calling it a “grand reopening” DC lifts capacity limits and the strictest Covid regulations on bars and restaurants today, May 21. Most notably, indoor dining rooms can be filled to capacity without social distancing, masks are no longer required for vaccinated individuals, bartenders can serve seated patrons at the bar, and a myriad of social activities from billiards to live music and axe throwing are now permitted.
Regulations on bars and nightclubs are also being loosened significantly. Nightclubs are allowed to operate at 50 percent capacity until June 11, when they’re allowed to open up entirely. Bars with a tavern license can go to full capacity today. Meanwhile in Montgomery County, which has maintained the strictest Covid regulations in Maryland, restaurants are now allowed to serve at 75 percent ca
