It was kind of Pat Fitzgerald to leave January 20 to Joe Biden and get much-awaited Northwestern football news out of the way.
After fans caught wind that NU could be getting a new transfer quarterback last week, South Carolina signal caller Ryan Hilinski officially announced Tuesday night that he will be transferring to Northwestern. The sophomore, with the extra year granted by the NCAA to all players, will have three seasons of eligibility left. He’s likely the odds-on favorite to win the starting job this fall.

The former South Carolina quarterback announced Tuesday night via social media he s transferring to Northwestern to play for the Wildcats.As a true freshman, Hilinski started 11 games in 2019, throwing for 2,357 yards and 11 touchdowns against 5 interceptions, but lost the starting job to graduate transfer Collin Hill in preseason camp. Helow (pronounced He-LOW), has previously been a part of two National Championship teams and has worked under some of the most respected minds in college football. His coaching career started at the University of Alabama under head coach Nick Saban. Helow has also worked under Kirby Smart, Jimbo Fisher, Mark Richt, Jeremy Pruitt, and Mike Bobo.
Helow has held stints at some of the nation s premiere collegiate programs during his coaching career, including the University of Alabama, Florida State University and the University of Georgia. In 2013, Helow helped lead Florida State to a national title as a defensive graduate assistant under Jimbo Fisher. He then spent two seasons as a defensive graduate assistant at the University of Georgia in 2014 and 2015 where he coached the safeties and worked closely with Jeremy Pruitt.
