Columbia’s second ward has elected a new council member.
Andrea Waner came out on top of the second ward race, with 52% of the vote. Candidates Jim Meyer, and Bill Weitkemper also ran for the seat that was opened up when former council member Mike Trapp decided not to seek a fourth term.
Waner said running the campaign took a lot of time and effort, but many in the community want to see women and moms succeed.
“I’m grateful that I get to be the first woman in over thirty years to represent the second ward on the city council,” Waner said.
Andrea Waner secures victory in Columbia s Second Ward council race
Andrea Waner fended off challengers Jim Meyer and Bill Weitkemper on Tuesday to win her first term as the Columbia City Council’s Second Ward representative.
Waner received 52.2% of votes, outgaining Meyer by 287 votes. Weitkemper finished in a distant third with 195 total votes.
Waner, chair of the city s Human Rights Commission, replaces Mike Trapp after he didn’t seek reelection following nine years at City Hall. Trapp’s most recent win was in 2018.
Absentee voting left Waner with a narrow 67-51 lead over Meyer, and that margin remained relatively constant throughout the election results.
The last time this seat was held by a woman was in April 1988, when former mayor Mary Anne McCollum served the second ward.
COLUMBIA - Columbiaâs second ward will be represented by a woman for the first time in 33 years after Tuesdayâs general municipal election.
Andrea Waner emerged victorious at the end of the night, beating out two other candidates, Bill Weitkemper and Jim Meyer for the City Council spot.
âI am excited and relieved all at the same time, and also terrified,â she said. âItâs going to be great.â
The seat is currently held by Mike Trapp, who did not seek reelection.
