Program #240 (April 16 at 8:00 p.m. and April 17 at 3:00 p.m.)
Mike Barnett is a virtuoso fiddler with a sound that straddles traditional and contemporary bluegrass, jazz, and folk.
Raised in Nashville, Barnett began playing the fiddle in his youth and by his teens was already a formidable performer. At age 14, he recorded his debut album, Lost Indian, which found him putting his mark on a set of bluegrass fiddle classics. From there, he caught the ear the director of Vanderbilt University s fiddle program, which brought him on board to teach at the Vanderbilt Blair School of Music International Fiddle Camp alongside such veteran performers as Vassar Clements, Bobby Hicks, and Buddy Spicher.

Fiddler Mike Barnett Enlists Sarah Jarosz for Reflective “Hollow City” (premiere)
The track holds a special place in Barnett’s heart. He tells PopMatters, “This song means a lot to me. It encapsulates my process of letting go of New York City, where my closest friends and music community were.”
For all of 2020’s general chaos and tumult, Mike Barnett suffered a brain aneurysm last summer on top of all of it. Thankfully, the prodigal fiddler has undergone two successful surgeries since and is regaining movement with the assistance of his wife, Annalise Ohse a classical violinist of equal prowess.

SAN DIEGO
When Kelly Martinez began her career with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy in 1985, female deputies and their male counterparts were not always viewed as equally capable of the job.
Martinez and other female deputies got the same assignment out of the academy: the women’s Las Colinas Detention Facility in Santee. A year later, Martinez was among the first female deputies assigned to a men’s jail. She would work as a deputy for 22 years before rising through the ranks to assistant chief.
Now she is poised to make history again. On Friday, Feb. 26, the 36-year veteran of the force will become the first woman to serve as the department’s undersheriff, the second in command.
