1. In terms of hype, popularity and anticipation, no sporting event has grown as much as the NFL draft has recently.
There was already massive thirst for this year s draft because of the five quarterbacks who went in the first round and because we didn t get a traditional draft last season.
I m sure that development got a few more eyeballs on ESPN, ABC and NFL Network, all of which aired the draft.
I sampled all three presentations throughout the night and have some thoughts.
• I don t know if Roger Goodell gave the order to constantly talk about how great it was to have fans back at the NFL draft, but that narrative was hammered by many of the on-air talent and it got old fast. Same for the constant reminders that everyone was vaccinated.

Thursday’s coverage of the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft drew solid numbers across ESPN/ABC/NFL Network. It dropped off from last year’s record of 15.26 million average English-language viewers, but as per Paulsen at Sports Media Watch, the draft drew its second-highest viewership numbers ever across networks this year:
The opening round of the NFL Draft averaged 12.52 million viewers across ESPN, ABC and NFL Network Thursday night, the second-largest audience in the history of the event. Viewership declined 18% from last year’s all-time record of 15.26 million, set during a period in which all other competing sporting events were on hiatus.

The San Francisco 49ers selection of North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance with the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft on Thursday night came as a surprise to many given the deafening chatter about Alabama s Mac Jones.
While much of the chatter was merely dot-connecting and educated guessing, a number of putative insiders at one point or another proclaimed that Jones would be the pick, thus fueling more dot-connecting and educated guessing.
