Democratic U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich presented an American flag to Mestas during a ceremony on the morning of May 4 at the San Juan County Administrative Building in Aztec.
Mestas was recognized as a Heinrich Hometown Hero and was presented with an American flag which was flown over the U.S. Capitol.
Heinrich had a nearly 30-minute meeting with county officials including San Juan County Manager Mike Stark, San Juan County commissioners John Beckstead and Terri Fortner.

Mini-budget planned for gas-tax spending
Sarnia city council agreed Monday to craft a mini-budget in the coming weeks on how to spend an extra $2.2 million in federal gas-tax funding.

City staff had recommended waiting until budget deliberations in the fall to figure out on what capital projects to spend the extra money – total gas-tax funding for the city this year is about $4.4 million – but council opted to make earlier spending plans.
“I would just as soon not tie our hands,” Coun. Terry Burrell said. “Just let it flow as it normally would.”
