gjaehnig@mininggazette.com LANSING The U.P. Energy Task Force (UPETF) submitted its final energy supply report to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s office on March 31. The 61-page report includes 16 recommendations for action by the governor, the state legislature, and state agencies, including solutions to promote enhanced planning and coordination among energy providers; support the transition to cleaner, more advanced energy supplies; expand opportunities for regional economic growth; and advance environmental justice for all U.P. residents. The report also cautions that delivering affordable, reliable, secure, and environmentally sound energy solutions for U.P. families and businesses will not be easy.

Gretchen Whitmer on Wednesday 16 recommendations that would improve affordability, enhance reliability and promote energy security for residents of the Upper Peninsula. Citing exceptional geography that has hindered its infrastructure development and contributed to market dynamics that expose U.P. families and businesses to some of the nation’s highest electricity rates and energy supply vulnerabilities, the Task Force’s Upper Peninsula Energy Task Force Committee Recommendations: Part II – Energy Supply suggests actions the Governor, State Legislature and state agencies can take to alter the status quo of the region’s energy landscape.

Task force drafts 16 UP energy recommendations

MARQUETTE, MI    The Upper Peninsula Energy Task Force is looking for public input on its draft recommendations. The group has spent the last two years studying the energy landscape in the U.P. to identify possible alternatives to meeting the region’s energy needs. The task force came up with 16 recommendations. They include encouraging electric providers to participate in an Upper Peninsula-wide electric plan; developing renewable energy, energy storage and electric vehicle charging; and offering residential programs for energy upgrade grants and early purchase of propane. Residents have until March 14 to comment on the draft. Public input will be considered by the task force as it finalizes recommendations during its final meeting March 16.
