As the spring weather entices us back into our gardens it s worth remembering that Cuthbert s seeds was based at Upper Dee Mill, Llangollen. James Cuthbert, who is said to have walked from Scotland to London to seek his fortune, started the business in the late 1700s. The firm was well known for selling its seeds in Woolworth s, a name now gone from the High Streets, with the packets first appearing on the counters there in 1937. The packets sold for two old pennies per packet. Thanks to colour printing technology, it was possible to package the seeds in bright envelopes with idealised artwork that proved a potent marketing tool.

River levels are said to be above normal in Bangor-on-Dee - which was hit by severe floods just last month

WATER levels in a village which suffered severe flooding last month are above normal once more, Natural Resources Wales (NRW) have said. People were evacuated from their homes when floods hit Bangor-on-Dee, near Wrexham, last month as Storm Christoph hit the region. It was one of several communities in the Wrexham area affected with the likes of Rosssett and New Broughton also suffering. Now, NRW have posted another flood alert for the area, as river levels rise once more due to heavy rain. They added that river levels in the village are currently “above normal” and that officers are monitoring the situation .

WEATHER: How much rain has fallen across the CQ region

From Emerald to Rockhampton and down past Gladstone, most areas have received up to 50mm or above. Bureau of Meteorology rainfall and river condition data shows 56mm fell at Broadmeadows weather station near Rockhampton in the 24 hours to 9.30am Wednesday. At Yeppoon, 62mm was recorded for the same time period while 59mm fell at Pacific Heights, 50mm at Raglan, 35mm at Headlow Airfield, 51mm at Williamson RAAF at Shoalwater Bay, 55mm at Lonesome Creek near Theodore, 50mm at Rileys Crossing near Emerald, 37mm at Westwood, 40mm at Upper Dee, 88mm at Gladstone and 69mm at Boyne Island. The rain is expected to stick around for some time yet, as a trough lies over western and central parts of the state.
