It seems some media outlets are still refusing to hire from the culture they profit from.
SZA has called out one publication for refusing to hire a Black photographer for her photoshoot.
As reported by
Madame Noire the songstress did a bit of venting earlier this week regarding opportunities for people of color within the entertainment industry. On Tuesday, May 25 she took to Twitter to reveal that she requested a creative from the melanin community curate the visuals for said feature but was told no by the staff. I requested a black photographer for a cover n the mag told me no lol its 2021.. and almost Juneteenth . Respectfully I can’t do it” she wrote.
The Grammy-nominated songstress didn’t provide any further details about her comment, though many suspect she was taking aim at Top Dawg Entertainment.
SZA admits she was “shocked and confused” by the success of “Good Days.” “It wasn’t meant to be a single,” she told “CBS This Morning” earlier this year. “It was just a song that I liked that I kinda put out as a snippet and then people liked it, but it’s like the type of song that I wouldn’t expect…It’s just honest vibes.”
This isn’t the first time SZA has publicly slammed her label. Back in August, she called out Top Dawg Entertainment after fans asked why it was taking so long to release music.
The Sun’s Tirade, Tennessee Hip Hop has undergone a meteoric rise thanks to the success of many Memphis rappers. The Top Dawg Entertainment signee may be from Chattanooga, but he’s inspired by other cities in his state and has been paying attention to some of the current trailblazing artists taking over the charts.
In a new interview with
Billboard, Isaiah Rashad saluted a number of Memphis natives and voiced his hopes to connect with them at some point.
“Memphis got the whole shit on lock,” he said. “I saw [Moneybagg Yo] got the No. 1 album in the country. You got [Young Dolph], Bagg, [Key Glock] Glock my favorite. How [Yo Gotti] doing shit signing n-ggas and he got 42 Dugg on top of all that shit. Only thing that sucks about that shit is I don’t even know them n-ggas. I just hope at one point in time I get to meet them n-ggas and chop it up and break bread because that’s some inspirational shit.”
