Wichita city council looks at details of ethics policy
Wichita city council members spent almost four hours Tuesday in a workshop discussion on a proposed new ethics policy.
City Manager Robert Layton presented elements of the policy resulting from a council retreat last summer. The policy would include provisions relating to conflict of interest, limits on gifts, whistleblower protection.
Council members got into a lengthy discussion on Political Action Committees and campaign finance, and Mayor Brandon Whipple pointed out that those areas are covered under state law. The council plans more discussions at a later time, and Whipple said he would like to have a briefing from someone involved in campaign finance law. He wants council members to know how the current statutes work and then determine what can be done at the city level to curb the influence of money on local campaigns.
