City passes annual budget with only one fund in red

A year after approving a budget that projected a quarter-million dollar deficit, the City Council last week passed a more positive budget for the coming fiscal year.
City Manager Gary Bradley said all the city departments except the cemetery department are expected to finish the year in the black. The cemeteries, which require much labor and don’t take in much revenue, customarily operate in the red.
Budget projections for fiscal 2022 are:
General fund, $6,928,915 in revenue, $6,913,800 in expenses
Special revenue funds (which include the city’s economic development fund and other miscellaneous funds), $2,673,845 in revenues and $3,117,455 in expenses. The city’s revolving loan is projected to spend almost $520,000 more than it takes in; council members have said monies accumulated in this fund should be spent more aggressively to help local businesses.
