Village Manager Caleb Katz says he’s looking into getting financial assistance to rebuild.
“Our state representatives, local representatives and even federal representatives have been very responsive, very helpful and kind of listening to what our needs are, and I know that they’re going to be doing the best that they can to try to find us some sort of funding or money.”
Local hotels are assisting the 37 people who were displaced by the fire. Businesses and residents have been donating food, clothing, money and furniture to those affected. Katz says the incident has shown him how strong residents’ bonds really are.

The village of Calumet will be using grant funds from the Gary Sinise Foundation to replace 20 SCBA air tanks like the one shown above.
CALUMET The Calumet Village Fire Department is receiving a grant of $22,000 for new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus air tanks, which are set to expire this summer, according to a release from the village. The grant is from the Gary Sinise Foundation. The tanks, which are used anytime entry is needed into hazardous environments, are soon to expire, and if not replaced would prevent firefighters from being able to adequately complete their duties.

CALUMET While the Village Council has invested more than a year, and thousands of dollars, in restructuring of the zoning ordinance for the sake of marijuana-related businesses, the investments have come at the expense of other council business. One example, according to a source, is the village’s annual budget. The council is on deadline to pass a budget by Feb. 25, and while no one has yet seen it, it is being drafted by former Village President Dave Geisler. Other questions have also arisen under the new administration, while others persist.
Village Clerk Kevin Weir who was recently reappointed to the position, brought up a number of them in a recent email to Village President Brian Abramson, Manager Caleb Katz, and Trustees Andrew Ranville, Roxanne King and Lori Weir.

CALUMET The Village Planning Commission and the Village Council continue to move forward with zoning and marijuana ordinances, but are doing so cautiously to avoid further or future problems.
In the order of procedures listed in the Michigan General Law Village Act, in order to implement Ordinance Number 153, Adult Use Marihuana, the Village Zoning Ordinance first must be updated to include the establishment of marijuana-related businesses with village limits.
Village Manager Caleb Katz said in an interview Thursday that the existing zoning ordinance dates back to 1990, and was revised in 1997, long before any thought of legalizing marijuana, on any level, was considered. For that reason, there is no section of the zoning ordinance that permits the establishment of existence of marijuana facilities within the village.
