Newsmaker of the month: Fredonia water failure looms again | News, Sports, Jobs

May 2, 2021 September’s water woes were only a part of a larger story. For years, this corner has focused on the instability and high cost to users of the Fredonia water system. In April, a new business that plans to open in July took it a step further. William McFadden, who owns the two-acre site that was previously a Tops Express location across from Walmart, announced that Luv Car Wash, Luv Express Service and Luv Pre-Owned Auto Dealership will be built at 10398 Bennett Road. He says it will create 22 jobs and “revolutionize the car wash industry.” His announcement was something many in the area had been awaiting for more than two years. But McFadden, who says the project will cost $3 million, went a step further on why he waited.

Lower rates buoy Pomfret development | News, Sports, Jobs

Lower water and sewer rates in the town of Pomfret are already beginning to make a splash when it comes to development. William McFadden, who owns the 2-acre site that was previously a Tops Express location across from Walmart, announced that Luv Car Wash, Luv Express Service and Luv Pre-Owned Auto Dealership will be built at 10398 Bennett Road. He says it will create 22 jobs and “revolutionize the car wash industry.” McFadden said the $3 million project, which is targeted to open around mid July, almost did not happen due to high water and sewer rates that had been contractually agreed to by the town through the village of Fredonia. However, a new deal that was negotiated between the two municipalities in March was the key to the project starting.

Pomfret seals deal for Fredonia water | News, Sports, Jobs

jward@observertoday.com It is now official. The village of Fredonia and town of Pomfret have a new contract for water and sewer. At Pomfret’s Town Board meeting Wednesday, Supervisor Dan Pacos said the process that led to this endeavour finally reaching a finish line took more than a year’s worth of work. “Currently, up until recently, residents were paying 170% of the village water rate and 200% of the sewer rate. Town commercial customers were paying 300% of the village water rate and 300% of the village sewage rate,” Pacos said. “All of our contracts except for our water district contract for the north end water district had expired back as far as 20 years ago.

Fredonia OKs water pact with Pomfret | News, Sports, Jobs

jward@observertoday.com In a 3-2 vote, Fredonia Village Board members narrowly approved the water contract with the town of Pomfret. During discussion of the controversial issue, there was an urgency by some of the trustees to agree to the contract because the town was tiring of the wait, which may have led Pomfret to move its supplier to the North County Water District. Fredonia Trustee James Lynden was the most outspoken on this issue. “The contracts were not even negotiated,” he said. “Roger Britz (Fredonia trustee) and I were part of the water negotiations and how it ended up at this point I don’t know. In my opinion it wasn’t ready to come out of any kind of committee. The other contracts that are being presented are not even a realistic request. They represent great loss in revenues to the village.”
