West Vail could go to one large grocery store under new plan

Special to the Daily VAIL A set of new master plan concepts for the West Vail commercial area received a viewing Wednesday from members of the public who were able to weigh in on ideas via multiple choice questions. About 70 people registered for the event. The grocery store question – how many grocery stores should be in the area and what types – received an overwhelming response among the dozens of Zoom meeting attendees, of which 71% said they’d like to see one large, full-service grocery store and one specialty foods store. The area currently contains both a Safeway and a City Market, and the suggestion to leave two large grocery stores received 21% favorability.

Vail shifts oversize vehicle, RV parking to West Vail

Charter Bus Lot east of the Lionshead parking structure this week became a construction site to accommodate the future home of the Children’s Garden of Learning. That means parking for all oversize vehicles 20 feet or longer, including buses, RVs and trailers, will be directed to West Vail across from Safeway along the south side of the North Frontage Road. The oversize vehicle parking area will be available for free throughout the summer. Overnight parking will be allowed east of the West Vail Mall bus stop. Self-serve permits will be available at the bus stop and must be filled out and placed face up and visible through the driver’s side front windshield. No camping will be allowed and vehicles will not be permitted to stay for more than three days.

West Vail s future is being planned now

Much of West Vail is virtually unchanged in the decades since the area was annexed into town. West Vail is a place where time has stood still in many ways. A new town effort aims to change that. Town officials for the past several months have been working on a new master plan for West Vail. The scope of the plan includes commercial and residential areas on both the north and south sides of Interstate 70. The next step in the planning process is a Dec. 17 transportation workshop , to be conducted virtually at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Vail Community Development Director Matt Gennett said that workshop is a chance for residents and planners to talk about topics including transportation, building and infrastructure design and housing.
