VIDEOS OF THE iconic basking shark flood our social media every summer. The peaceful plankton-feeding fish started to arrive off our shores last week.
However, prospects for this giant fish and its smaller relatives are not good. Research earlier this year found that three-quarters of sharks and rays that live in our oceans are threatened with extinction.

Under the terms of the Brexit agreement, EU fleets will have to give back 25 percent of fish caught in UK waters. Giving evidence to the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee on Friday, Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue said that after meeting fishing groups, he will set up a taskforce to seek recommendations on how to support the sector.

Patrick Murphy, CEO of the Cork-based Irish South & West Fish Producers Organization (IS&WFPO), accused the bloc of “betraying” his country in a scorching takedown of the agreement. He said the deal denies Irish fishermen the right to work in waters where they have traditionally operated for centuries.

Patrick Murphy, CEO of the Cork-based Irish South & West Fish Producers Organization (IS&WFPO), was speaking after having spent the last fortnight digesting the agreement on fisheries reached between the UK and EU on Christmas Eve. And he warned the deal would have “devastating” consequences on Irish fishing communities, accusing Mr Martin and Mr Varadkar before him of being complicit in “throwing them to the wolves”.
