Lihula shooter sentenced to 20 years prison time

A court sentenced the Lihula shooter, who killed two people in the southwestern Estonian town of the same name last summer during a shooting spree which also seriously injured three others, to 20 years in prison Thursday. The prosecutor's office is appealing the decision and seeking a lengthier jail term.

Prosecutor seeking life for Lihula shooter

The prosecutor s office said Monday it is seeking a life sentence for a man who killed two and injured three during a shooting spree in Pärnu County last summer. The prosecutor made the statement during summing-up at Pärnu County Court, in respect of Mikk Tarraste, 33, who carried out the double homicide near the village of Lihula in June 2020. Tarraste is charged with murder; the firearms used in the attack were legal, BNS reports, though illegal types of ammunition were found in the course of the investigation, both at the summer house he fled to near Lihula, following the attack, and at his Tallinn home.

Court hands shock imprisonment to customs official for bribe-taking

A customs official who accepted bribes from a customs agent for prompt clearance was handed a prison sentence on Friday by Pärnu County Court. The 45-year-old official who misused his official position was given a four-year jail sentence, of which he must immediately serve two months. The rest of the jail sentence is conditional with a four-year probation term. The bribe-giver, a 46-year-old man active in customs brokerage, was given a sentence of three years in jail. Just like the official, he must immediately serve two months in prison and the rest of the prison term is conditional with a three-year probation term.

Lihula shooter pleads guilty over civil damages, denies fleeing scene

A man who fired on several people near the village of Lihula, Pärnu County, last June, killing two and injuring four, has pleaded guilty to charges brought in civil cases against him, on the opening day of his trial Monday. However, he denies attempting to conceal firearms or fleeing the scene. It was after doing the latter that the accused allegedly killed the two individuals. Mikk Tarraste, 32, entered a guilty plea at the first-tier Pärnu County Court, BNS reports, meaning he admits his guilt and accepts all civil actions brought against him. Tarraste however pleaded not guilty for attempting to conceal his crimes and of fleeing the scene.
