By U.S. Attorney s Office for the Western District of Louisiana issued the following announcement on Apr. 15.  The Justice Department announced that it has entered into a proposed consent decree to settle a voting rights lawsuit with the City of West Monroe, Louisiana. The Justice Department’s lawsuit, brought under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, challenges the current at-large method of electing the West Monroe Board of Aldermen. Under this agreement, the City of West Monroe will change its method of electing its Board of Aldermen to ensure compliance with the protections of the Voting Rights Act. The proposed consent decree was filed in federal court in conjunction with a lawsuit brought by the Justice Department. The department’s complaint alleges that the current method of electing the West Monroe Board of Aldermen results in black citizens in West Monroe having less opportunity than white citizens to participate in the political process and to elect candidate

Special to USA Today Network The West Monroe Board of Aldermen voted during its regular meeting on Tuesday to propose a mixed method election plan to the U.S. Department of Justice. The mayor and board were presented prospective litigation with the U.S. Department of Justice that would require a change in the method of electing the members of the West Monroe Board of Aldermen to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act. The aldermen voted to present to the U.S. Department of Justice a mixed method election plan with three members elected from single-member districts and two members elected at large.

City of West Monroe The West Monroe City Council voted during its regular meeting held on Tuesday, April 13 to propose a mixed method election plan to the U.S. Department of Justice. The Mayor and Board of Aldermen were presented prospective litigation with the U.S. Department of Justice that would require a change in the method of electing the members of the West Monroe Board of Aldermen in order to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act. The Aldermen voted to present to the U.S. Department a Justice a mixed method election plan with three members elected from single member districts and two members of the Board of Aldermen elected at-large instead of all members being elected from single member districts.
