If you were a student at West Sedona School between 1991 and 2021, chances are you had Jessica Nelson as your art teacher. After 30 years of bringing her art expertise to the classroom, Nelson is retiring.
Nelson’s journey started in 1990, when she obtained her art teaching credentials from Northern Arizona University. From there, she took her first teaching job at a middle school in Austin, Texas.
West Sedona School wins 3-year statewide STEM grant

Christmas came early for West Sedona School as teachers and administrators found out recently that the school was just one of five chosen in the state to receive a prestigious grant geared toward the future of education.

The Special Olympics Torch Run will kick off at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 5, at the Sedona Cultural Park and will traverse through West Sedona to the Sedona Fire District’s Station 4 on Forest Road in Uptown at around 11 a.m. a total of 4.5 miles. The public is encouraged to come out on Wednesday, May 5, to cheer on some of Sedona’s most dedicated athletes.
The Special Olympics Torch Run will kick off at 9 a.m. at the Sedona Cultural Park and will traverse through West Sedona to the Sedona Fire District’s Station 4 on Forest Road in Uptown at around 11 a.m. a total of 4.5 miles. The event, which was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19, is again being hosted by the Sedona Police Department.

Affordable housing has long been an albatross for the city of Sedona.
While officials use the term “affordable,” and there is a federally defined term “low income housing,” what city officials and most residents really mean is “workforce” housing.
Sedona City Councils in the 1990s discussed workforce housing problems before I moved here. For the past 20 years, affordable housing has been a “priority” and yet, virtually nothing gets accomplished in terms of actual workforce housing.
Sedona has seen one multifamily complex in the last decade, but its rents are arguably not really that affordable for most workers. Other developments face backlash long before specific details are even announced, such as the 52-unit complex proposed off Andante Drive in 2019.
