Traffic deaths on Ohio s roadways over the Independence Day weekend fell slightly in 2021 from the year prior, despite more people traveling this year, the state Highway Patrol reports.
Sixteen people were killed in 15 fatal traffic crashes between Friday and Monday, according to figures released Tuesday by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Preliminary investigation data suggests that alcohol and drug impairment was a factor in at least five of those crashes.
This year’s traffic fatalities represent a decrease from July 2-5, 2020, when 25 people were killed in 24 fatal crashes. Of those, 17 crashes and 18 fatalities involved alcohol and drugs.
Troopers responded to a total 534 crashes and made more than 40,000 traffic contacts over the holiday weekend this year, which included providing assistance to more than 2,761 motorists. Troopers made 536 arrests for impaired driving and 368 for drug-related charges.
