A significant snowstorm is set to hit Southern New England in the coming hours, dropping up to a foot or more of snow on Rhode Island stating Wednesday night and continuing into Thursday. Across the state, cities and towns have declared parking bans and school districts are planning for distance learning.
Snow is expected to arrive in the state around 7 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Road conditions will likely deteriorate quickly as one to two inches of snow fall per hour at the storm s height.
Right after graduating high school, Robillard and his piano-playing buddy Al Copley founded Roomful of Blues, which turned their love of rhythm and blues into an internationally acclaimed “little big band” that toured the world. Robillard left Roomful in 1979, embarking on a solo career, which also included stints with The Legendary Blues Band, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Robillard’s solo work, with his trio the Pleasure Kings, tended more toward primal rock, but he also loves jazz, and has recorded and performed with such jazz stars as Scott Hamilton, Gerry Beaudoin, Herb Ellis and Jay Geils.
The album reflects all of Robillard’s musical strengths, from the rollicking, Roomful-like jaunt through Ike Turner’s “Do You Mean It?” to Dave Batholomew’s rompin’, stompin’ swinger “Ain’t Gonna Do It,” to the easy rolling ballad from Al King, “Everybody Ain’t Your Friend.”
PROVIDENCE Four nominees to state court bench are expected to go before the full Senate on Friday after being approved by the state Senate Committee on the Judiciary.
The committee on Tuesday night roundly approved, following glowing testimony, Gov. Gina Raimondo’s nomination of Linda Rekas Sloan and Superior Court Magistrate Richard Raspallo as Superior Court judges; Central Falls Municipal Court Judge Elizabeth Ortiz to the Family Court bench; and Kevin Reall to Workers’ Compensation Court.
If approved by the Senate, Rekas Sloan and Ortiz would make historic firsts in Rhode Island, Rekas Sloan as the first Asian-American to be seated on Superior Court and Ortiz as the first Latina to sit on the court that oversees child custody, divorce and juvenile matters. Both lifetime posts have a $170,545 annual base salary.

Police seized around 15 pounds of marijuana and a large knife during a traffic stop. (Rhode Island State Police)
WEST WARWICK, RI Rhode Island State Police seized approximately 15 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop on I-95 North early Wednesday morning.
Yong Zhuang Chen, 49, of West Warwick, was pulled over in West Greenwich just before 3 a.m. When troopers searched the vehicle, they found around 15 pounds of marijuana and a knife about 8.5 inches long.
Chen was charged with possession with intent to distribute a schedule one controlled substance, possession of more than five kilograms of marijuana and posession of a knife during the commission of a crime. He was arraigned at Kent County District Court and ordered held without bail.
